Nightlatch Repair – Broken Handle Replaced & Door Restored

This morning we were called out to a property after the customer reported that their roller nightlatch handle had completely come off, making it impossible to retract the latch from outside. As you can see in the photo, the spindle section inside the handle had snapped clean off — a common issue with worn or low-quality handles, especially on high-traffic doors.

Without a working handle, the door couldn’t be operated properly, leaving the customer stuck inside and unable to secure the property.

What We Found on Arrival

The roller nightlatch handle had sheared off
The internal spindle was damaged and worn
The latch could not retract, preventing normal entry
The remaining part of the handle was stuck inside the lock body

This type of failure is prevalent on roller nightlatches used in flats, HMOs, student accommodation, and high-use apartment blocks across East London.

How We Repaired It

We completed a full repair which included:

1️⃣ Removing the broken spindle

The remaining spindle was lodged inside the lock body. We safely extracted it without damaging the nightlatch mechanism.

2️⃣ Inspecting the roller nightlatch

We checked the roller latch, follower, and internal springs to ensure everything inside the lock was still functioning correctly.

3️⃣ Fitting a new, high-strength handle

We installed a new reinforced handle with a solid spindle — far stronger than the old one.
This ensures smoother operation and much longer life, especially on busy doors.

4️⃣ Testing the door for smooth operation

Once fitted, we checked:

Latch retraction
Spring tension
Alignment
Opening/closing from inside and outside

Everything was restored to full working order.
